Membrane keyboards and graphic overlays are commonly found on any type of equipment or gadget that has a user interface, for example, fascias for industrial controls, access control systems, medical equipment, household appliances and security systems.
They are more resistant against dirt and liquids than ordinary keypads and easy to wipe clean, which makes them a popular solution for many applications, especially in hygiene critical environments such as the healthcare and catering industries.
However, if you wipe a console clean with disinfectant, it will only stay bacteria free for a couple of hours at most. After that, any new bugs landing on the surface will continue to multiply. Studies have found that the risks of transmitting germs and bacteria between a keypad and human skin is fairly high. If there is a bug sitting on the surface, there is a good chance it will make it on to your hands.
Market leaders Graphic Art Ltd, based in Cambridge, is working with Biomaster to develop the new generation of safer, more hygienic membrane keypads and graphic overlays that inhibit the growth of most common types of harmful bacteria such as MRSA, E.coli and Salmonella.
Microbes that land on a Biomaster protected surface are unable to replicate and therefore they die. The technology works 24 hours a day for the lifetime of the product.
Graphic Art (Cambridge) Ltd was established 46 years ago and produces a wide range of products associated with the printed graphics industry, including membranes, fascias and overlay options to cater for virtually any substrate, surface or environment.
Operations Manager Patrick Hull comments: “The added protection provide to our products by the simple and economic application of Biomaster is proving very popular in particular customer applications”
Addmaster Marketing Manager Karl Shaw adds: “Our hands are responsible for the spread of 80% of common infectious diseases, so antibacterial membrane keypads and graphic overlays are one of the smartest, most cost effective means of infection control in the workplace.
